SGIATH A’CHAISE GM/SS-095

Sunday 27th March 2011
This is the start of British summer time so having lost an hours sleep a shorter journey was planned to Glen Ample to coincide with the Sota UHF fun day.
Forecast looked ok.Fighting back a heavy cold i decided to go for it and got packed up and ready to go by 0815,not too far into the journey i was stopped at a road block on the A81 due to tree felling and had to detour through Killearn(why no previous warnings or diversion signs?)following on through Callander and parking up at a large parking bay beside Loch Luibnaig which is the same start point as a previous blog for Beinn Each. After booting up i started my walk at 0930 for the walk up Sgiath a’ Chaise NN583169. 645M/2,116FT.
A nice track leads through a fairly steep stretch of forest which gave me the chance to sweat my cold out, soon through the trees and onto a fine path which heads up Glen Ample.Spring is definitely here as the route was littered by frog spawn all the way along the path, after passing a new sign post for the neighbouring corbett Beinn Each on the right hand side,i struck off up the hillside on my left which was mainly heather and tussock ground. The first top is soon reached which is named Creag a’Mhadaidh and from here it is a straight forward line of sight walk in to the summit of Sgiath a’Chaise. The summit itself is nothing to write about but nice views N & S.The W. is dominated by Ben Ledi and Ben Vane with Ben Each,Ben Vorlich and Stuc a’chroin holding up the views to the East.
This poor wee chappie had come to a grizzly end at the foot of Sgiath
a’chaise
Looking east towards Beinn Each (far right)
And Ben Vorlich an Stuc a’chroin
to the Left
Set up the beam using an old iron fence post as a mast support and managed 2 summit to summit contacts on 70cm which were TAI/P on GM/SS-015 and Bobby GM7GAX/P on GM/SS-027.The same stations were worked on 2M as well as IOB/P (also on SS-027) FMF/P on GM/SS-037,COX/P on GM/SS-025 and PKT/P on GM/CS-017.Also managed a WOTA station in Cumbria on Wandope LDW051.Thanks to RAM and XXP for alerting on sota and to all the other stations worked on the day.

Hi Graeme
Looks like you had a good day.
I concidered doing this one last year along with Beinn Each but I was running short on time an decided to give it a miss.
Keep up the good work, until the next time.

Hi Neil/ Thanks for dropping by on the blog, this hill could be done with Beinn Each if time allowed ok.
I planned to walk it during the winter bonus period which would be a fairly easy 5 pointer but time
ran away.Shame we never got a chance at a summit to summit due to a certain nasty land owner.
Hope to hear you on the high tops again soon.
